How To Start An Online Course Business in Less Than 5 Hours Per Week

The first thing you'll need to do is identify your U.S.P. (unique selling proposition) to stand out amongst a noisy online crowd of similar professionals.

To do this, narrow down your focus on who you serve and what you help them with.

A transformational experience could be anything from helping someone have perfectly shaped eyebrows to helping their baby sleep through the night, losing 30 lbs, or doubling their salary.

The more extensive the transformational experience, the more you can charge. The more you can charge, the more you'll earn.

Once you're clear on the transformational experience you offer, I recommend that you start your online business endeavour by using offline tactics.

Prove to yourself that your online course business idea is profitable by first pre-selling it as a group coaching experience to people IRL.

Have a clear offer to sell, with a clear outcome goal to achieve and enroll students into your paid program.

Don't worry about techy tools just yet; you don't need them.

Now once you've pre-sold your group coaching program, then you can choose to deliver on your promise with a weekly 1-hour zoom call if you'd like. Just be sure to record every session. You'll need the recordings to be able to convert your paid program into an online course easily.

Keep your first online course simple. Short-to-the-point lessons are best.

You can use the recorded zoom video lessons as they are and or choose to build a slide deck to streamline and add visuals to your classes.

Converting your zoom lessons into an online course can quickly be done from your computer, or better yet, you can hire someone to convert your content for you—a smart move for those super short on time.

Once the program's lesson plans are polished, now we format them into an ebook that can be used as a lead magnet to attract new clients online to your paid course. Helping you build your credibility as an online authority by using it to book guest speaking opportunities such as guest podcasting or sell your book on Amazon and use it as another income stream.

Now that you have successfully converted your live group coaching program into two monetizable digital assets begin to focus on building your evergreen money generating machine, also known as your marketing sales funnel.

A marketing sales funnel is your online customer journey experience planned out exactly how you'll attract new prospective clients (ideally with your published book) and convert them into paid online course attendees.

You'll build our automated marketing sales funnel using free to low-cost online tools that are easy to set up. You don't have to be tech savvy. If you can navigate Facebook, you can set up your online evergreen sales machine.

Now that you have a fully functioning online course business, it's time to pivot your focus to up-leveling your online marketing efforts by putting together your T.O.F. (top of marketing funnel) plan.

A T.O.F. plan can include organic social media marketing, paid ads, or content marketing like publishing a weekly blog post, podcast, and/or YouTube video.

When it comes to starting an online course business, my best advice is to...

  1. Keep it simple. The online landscape changes regularly, and it's easy to get shiny object syndrome, thinking that one type of software is better than the next. Don't get yourself caught in this broke cycle. You can always make tweaks and changes to your funnel down the road. Focus on getting a working automated marketing sales to funnel built, attracting a steady stream of new clients with your T.O.F. plan, working the plan, and making sales.

  2. Hire an expert. To scale your business to a steady 6-figures quickly, it's best to learn from someone who's done it. Rather than waste your time trying to D.I.Y. your online course business, leverage it by working with an expert or a team of experts who can take much of the workload off your plate.
